As an experienced early years teacher and tutor, I have had the privilege of working closely with children of all abilities, including those with special educational needs (SEN). Over the years, I became increasingly frustrated by the lack of diverse, relatable, and inclusive resources available for young learners. I saw first-hand how the illustrations, examples, and materials used in teaching could create unnecessary barriers. Children often struggled to connect with resources that did not reflect their world, which slowed their understanding and, ultimately, their learning journey. I started creating bespoke resources for my one-to-one tutoring sessions, tailoring them to be more inclusive and reflective of the children I worked with. The impact was immediate and profound—not just for the children but for me as an educator. However, I knew I was not alone in this challenge. Many other teachers were also spending countless hours adapting resources to make them work for their classrooms. Even small details mattered, such as fonts. Fonts that confused children by displaying letters differently than they were taught only served to undermine the hard work teachers put into their instruction. This is where Chara Kids was born. Chara means "joy" in Greek—even through difficult times—which is exactly what I want my resources to bring to both educators and children.
